Location Scouting From The Perspective of A Dallas Commercial Photographer
We all know that the right location is everything in photography. It sets the mood, adds depth, and enhances the story within an image. This spot (can’t say what it is exactly, sorry) is one of the best I’ve shot at in the Dallas area. The setting of a shoot takes images to another level, and the photos we captured here wouldn’t have been as strong without it.
How We Found This Location
The location for this shoot was actually chosen by the stylist, Nichole. While working with a friend who lives nearby, she noticed its unique textures, colors, and overall atmosphere. She immediately saw its potential for a future shoot, and she was right. The space had a cinematic feel that perfectly complemented the concept and gave us plenty to work with visually.
The Concept Behind the Shoot
When Nichole reached out with the concept and styling, I was immediately drawn in. She took inspiration from the 2019 film Queen & Slim, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith. The story follows a couple on the run, leaving a trail of crime behind them. The colors, layering, and textures of the outfits aligned perfectly with that vision. The styling alone was strong, but the location tied everything together, adding the grit and depth needed to make the images feel immersive.

Challenges and How I Worked Around Them
No location is perfect, and this one had its own challenges. The biggest hurdle was the harsh sunlight. It was a bright, sunny day, which meant constantly adjusting angles, using shadows creatively, and positioning the subjects in ways that made the light work for us instead of against us. Some areas of the location were fully exposed to the sun, creating strong highlights and deep shadows, so I had to be intentional about where and how I framed each shot.
Another challenge was the natural clutter in certain areas. While the location had great textures, some spots were visually busy. I worked around this by adjusting compositions, shooting through objects to create depth, and choosing angles that kept the focus on the subjects.
Tips for Choosing the Right Photoshoot Location
If you're planning a shoot, here are a few things to consider when selecting a location:
Lighting: Be aware of how the sun moves through space at different times of day. If possible, visit the location beforehand.
Textures & Colors: Look for backgrounds that enhance your subject rather than distract from them.
Framing Opportunities: A great location offers natural elements to shoot through or use as leading lines.
Practicality: Think about accessibility, potential foot traffic, and whether any permits are needed.
Final Thoughts
The right location can transform a shoot, making images feel more intentional and immersive. Whether working on editorial projects, branding campaigns, or creative collaborations, I always prioritize finding a setting that enhances the story I want to tell. If you're looking for a Dallas commercial photographer who understands the impact of location, I’d love to collaborate and bring your vision to life.
